5 Tips for Including Siblings in Your Newborn Portraits
Newborn Photography East Aurora

Welcoming a new baby is such a joyful and emotional time, especially when there are already some big siblings in the mix! At my East Aurora studio, I love capturing some of the first connections between your new baby and their older brothers or sisters. But let’s be honest, toddlers and preschoolers don’t always love to sit still and smile on command! Here are a few helpful tips to make sure your older children feel excited, included, and ready to shine during your newborn portrait session.

1. Practice Makes Playful

Before your session, spend a little time playing “pretend photographer” at home. Use a toy or pretend camera and let your older child take turns being both the photographer and the model. This not only makes them feel involved, but also helps them understand what to expect when it’s time for the real photos. Show them with a doll how you’ll hold the baby gently, where they might sit, and how fun it can be!

2. Set the Scene

Kids feel more comfortable when they know what’s coming. A few days before your session, talk to them about what they’ll see at the studio. You can say something like, “We’re going to visit Miss Sarah’s studio. She has a big camera, pretty lights, cozy blankets, and even some toys. She’ll take pictures of our new baby, and she’s going to take some of you too!” Giving them a mental picture of the experience can go a long way in making them feel safe and confident.

3. Bring the Hype (and the Snacks!)

Let your child know that there will be something to look forward to when visiting the studio, and then make sure to bring that special something along with you! Whether it’s their favorite snack, a special toy, or even a short show queued up on your phone for after their part is done, this little bit of motivation can make a big difference. Something as simple as: “After we take a few photos, you get your fruit snacks and can watch an episode of Bluey!” can turn nerves into excitement.

4. Be Prepared to Let Them Take Breaks

My studio is designed with families in mind, and I always build in plenty of time for breaks, wiggles, and snack stops. If a sibling needs time to warm up or take a quick breather, that’s completely okay! I’ll usually start the session slowly to make sure that everyone has a chance to get comfortable before diving into everything. Being somewhere new can be challenging for young children and I do my best to work at a pace that your child is comfortable with.

5. Remember the Big Picture

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s connection and capturing your family exactly as you are right now. A sweet hug, a curious glance, or a giggly moment is often more meaningful than a perfectly posed photo. As a mom myself, I know how precious these first sibling moments are, and I’m here to help you preserve them in the most heartfelt, stress free way possible.
