Why booking early matters
If you’re expecting, it’s best to reserve your newborn photographer well before your due date. Babies tend to arrive whenever they please, which is often early, late, or somewhere in between. Availability for a newborn photographer can fill up quickly, especially during peak months.
By booking early, you get:
- Guaranteed studio availability around your due date. You don’t risk missing the ideal newborn window because the calendar was full.
- Time to plan in advance. Booking in advance will allow us time to discuss your vision, choose props and colors, and make sure the session suits your preferences.
- Plenty of flexibility. If delivery dates shift (as they often do), you can rest assured that because you booked your session in advance, there will still be a spot for you at the studio.
When to book: my recommendation
If possible, reach out and book during your second trimester. This will allow us plenty of lead time and flexibility for early or late babies.
Why second trimester?
- It’s early enough in your pregnancy that you’re likely past morning sickness, but far enough ahead that you’re ready to start planning for when baby arrives!
- It ensures your slot is reserved before your due date. After baby arrives, things can get chaotic quickly and you’re far less likely to be making arrangements after the fact.
What to do after booking
Because babies are unpredictable so here’s how to keep things smooth:
- Keep me in the loop! If you end up scheduling an induction or c-section or have any pregnancy related changes, please reach out to me.
- After baby arrives, please reach out within 1–2 days so that we can confirm together whether the date you originally booked will still work, or whether it will need to be adjusted.
Why timing matters
In my experience photographing newborns, the magic window for newborn photography tends to be within the first 1–3 weeks after birth. Babies are typically sleepier and much easier to pose and soothe. If you wait too long, baby may become more alert and less sleepy, which may change the style and mood of the photos.
If you wait until after delivery, you risk missing out on a time slot entirely if your photographer of choice is fully booked. You may also end up rushing around right after birth to line everything up.
Ideal timeline
| Stage | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Second trimester (weeks 13–28) | Reach out and book your session! |
| Third trimester (final 1–2 months) | Confirm any changes in your pregnancy, discuss preferences (style, poses, props, etc.) |
| After birth within 1–2 days | Notify me baby has arrived so we can confirm session date and time |
| Baby age 1–3 weeks | Schedule and complete the newborn session |
Bonus benefit: peace of mind
Booking early means you’ll have one less thing to worry about while you’re navigating the third trimester, birth, and newborn adjustments. It gives you time to plan, ask questions, and get excited instead of scrambling at the last minute.
