If you’re counting down the days until you meet your little baby, congratulations! Whether you’re a first time parent or a seasoned pro, those final weeks before labor can feel like a whirlwind. There’s excitement, a little bit of nervous energy, and a lot of to-dos. As a Buffalo baby photographer (and mom myself!), I’ve had the privilege of chatting with hundreds of parents about their birth prep, and I’ve put together a simple checklist to help you feel more confident and prepared before the big day.

1. Pre-register at the hospital
Many local hospitals allow you to pre-register online or by phone. This step can save you a ton of time when you arrive in labor and ensure a smoother check-in process. If you’re delivering at places like Oishei Children’s Hospital (website located here) or Millard Fillmore Suburban (website located here), hop on their website and get this done early—ideally by 32–34 weeks.
2. Decide who will be present during labor
It’s so important to think about who you want by your side during labor and delivery. Whether it’s your partner, a doula, or another support person, having a plan (and a backup plan!) in place will help ease any last-minute stress.
3. Create a written plan for labor and postpartum care
While birth rarely goes exactly as planned, having a general idea of your preferences—like pain management, golden hour bonding, or delayed cord clamping—can help you advocate for yourself during labor. Don’t forget postpartum care too: Will you want visitors right away? Who will help at home during recovery?
4. Line up childcare for your other kids
If you’ve got older children at home, you’ll want a trusted person on standby who can swoop in at a moment’s notice. Make sure they know where everything is, from school drop-off schedules to snack drawers. Bonus points if you have a little “big sibling” gift tucked away for when they meet the baby!
5. Make and freeze a few meals
Future you will thank you for this one! Prepping a few freezer-friendly meals (think soups, casseroles, or breakfast burritos) can be a lifesaver during those first sleepy, snuggly weeks at home.
6. Pack your hospital bag
Aim to have your bag packed by 36 weeks. Some essentials include cozy clothes, toiletries, phone charger, snacks, and anything that’ll make you feel more comfortable—like your own pillow or a favorite robe. And don’t forget a going-home outfit for baby!
7. Schedule your newborn portrait session
This one is often overlooked until after baby arrives—but planning ahead ensures you’ll get a spot on your favorite photographer’s calendar. I always recommend booking during your second or early third trimester. As a local Buffalo newborn photographer, my studio in East Aurora is fully stocked with everything you need—from diapers and pacifiers to wraps, props, and snacks for parents—so you can just show up and relax.
The last few weeks of pregnancy can feel like a blur, but a little prep goes a long way. It’s all about giving yourself peace of mind so you can focus on what really matters, which is welcoming your baby into the world!
